The Finch West LRT, a new light rail transit system in Toronto, has reached a significant milestone as operational control has been handed over to the TTC. Metrolinx officials confirmed the transfer, signaling a crucial step towards the system’s opening.
Over the weekend, the TTC transit control centre at the Hillcrest Yard took on the responsibility for managing operations of the Finch West LRT. This shift comes after a period of increasing TTC driver training, while the Mosaic Transit Group, the consortium overseeing construction and maintenance, continued its efforts.
Metrolinx’s president and CEO, Michael Lindsay, hinted at the transfer during a recent news conference, expressing confidence in the system’s readiness for revenue service. Lindsay emphasized the simplicity and reliability of the Finch West LRT compared to the Eglinton Crosstown line, suggesting a potential launch by the end of September.
Despite the promising developments, an official opening date has not been announced. Lindsay highlighted the importance of a successful 30-day revenue service demonstration to validate the system’s performance before full operation.
The Finch West LRT, with 18 stops along Finch Avenue West from Keele Street to Humber College station, has faced challenges, including a lawsuit over a contract dispute in 2024 and concerns about maintenance issues. However, officials remain optimistic about the system’s functionality following successful testing.
