A community fund established in response to the tragic Lapu Lapu Festival attack in Vancouver, which claimed the lives of 11 individuals, has now evolved into a long-term endowment benefiting the Filipino community.
The Vancouver Foundation, in collaboration with advocacy group Filipino BC, has transformed the fund into the Kapwa Strong Fund, intended to provide sustained support for generations within the Filipino community.
Following the devastating events in April, United Way BC served as a trusted platform for donations, which have since been channeled towards over 40 charities and community projects. The Vancouver Foundation aims to ensure a lasting impact by utilizing the fund to address both immediate needs and systemic issues affecting the community.
RJ Aquino, the board chair of Filipino BC, emphasized that the endowment will continue to support various programs and services, aiding in the recovery and advancement of the community post-tragedy.
United Way president and CEO, Michael McKnight, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts and support received during the fundraising campaign, underscoring the unity displayed by partners, donors, and community members in assisting those in distress.
The individual responsible for the attack, Adam Kai-Ji Lo, faces multiple charges, including 11 counts of second-degree murder.
