A 71-year-old man from Montreal, Ronald Lord, was recently handed a six-year jail sentence in the U.K. for attempting to smuggle cocaine in a rather unconventional way – inside a mobility scooter. The surprising case unfolded at Gatwick Airport in London, where border agents discovered eight kilograms of cocaine hidden in the scooter’s seat back panel, with an estimated street value surpassing $1 million.
Despite claiming innocence and citing a leisure trip to Barbados as the reason for his travels, Lord’s elaborate deception crumbled when authorities found a screw from the scooter’s panel in his possession. Further investigations revealed inconsistencies in his travel itinerary, ultimately leading to the unraveling of his smuggling attempt.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) emphasized the importance of cracking down on such smuggling operations, highlighting the critical role played by individuals like Lord in facilitating the illegal drug trade. Richard Wickham, a senior investigator on the case, warned against underestimating the vigilance of law enforcement, underscoring that age or perceived vulnerabilities do not exempt one from facing the consequences of criminal activities.
