“Drake Astonished by His Own ‘Degrassi’ Memories, Reveal Documentary Filmmakers”

The makers of a new documentary on the iconic TV series Degrassi faced challenges in getting Drake, the famous rapper and former cast member, to participate. Despite initial difficulties, Drake eventually opened up about his time as Jimmy Brooks on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” shedding light on his role in the show and its impact on his career.

Before rising to music stardom, Drake, then known as Aubrey Graham, portrayed Jimmy Brooks in the groundbreaking series. His character’s storyline, including a school shooting incident and subsequent wheelchair use, resonated with audiences and marked a pivotal moment in the show’s history.

Executive producer Carrie Mudd revealed that the process of convincing Drake to be part of the documentary started years ago and culminated in a visit to his Texas ranch for an interview in June. The documentary, titled “Degrassi: Whatever It Takes,” delves into the social significance of the beloved TV franchise and its enduring influence.

Set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film features filmmaker Lisa Rideout engaging with former cast members to explore the show’s unique portrayal of the teenage experience and its lasting impact on viewers.
