Richard Nancarrow, a 78-year-old veteran runner from Ontario, is embarking on a unique race that goes beyond the typical finish line triumphs. This time, his motivation stems from a heartfelt cause close to his heart – his granddaughter Molly Van Heuven.
Molly, a 25-year-old former ER nurse, was abruptly struck down by late-stage Lyme disease over two years ago, leaving her bedridden and battling a host of debilitating symptoms. Richard’s upcoming 10K run is dedicated to raising awareness and support for Molly’s ongoing fight against this relentless illness.
The road to diagnosis for Molly was arduous, involving a year-long journey with various specialists and international testing, before finally pinpointing Lyme disease along with several other co-infections and complications. To assist with the extensive treatment costs not covered by OHIP, Molly’s family initiated a fundraising campaign titled “Hope for Molly: A Nurse’s Battle Against Lyme Disease,” which has garnered tremendous community support.
For Richard, this race represents a poignant reminder of the strength he discovered through running post-heart surgery in 2016. However, this time around, each step he takes is a testament to the unwavering support and love families provide in times of adversity.
