STM Maintenance Strike Paralyzes Transit from Sept. 22 to Oct. 5 – What You Need to Know

Montreal Public Transit Disruption: STM Workers to Strike

Montreal residents who rely on public transit are advised to prepare for service disruptions as maintenance workers of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) are set to go on strike from September 22 to October 5.

During the strike period, buses and the métro will operate only during peak hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 6:15 to 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 to 6 p.m., with nightly service resuming at 11 p.m. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, regular schedules will be maintained, and adapted transit services will continue to run as usual.

Union president Bruno Jeannotte emphasized that the strike is a last resort to push for progress at the bargaining table, as the union, representing over 2,400 workers, seeks a 25% wage increase over five years. In response, the STM argues for more scheduling flexibility and subcontracting options to address financial challenges.

While STM spokesperson Katherine Roux Groleau affirmed the authority’s commitment to reaching a resolution, some Montrealers voiced support for the workers, highlighting the importance of fair treatment and adequate compensation. Despite the inconvenience, commuters like Sylvano Edmond and Hannah Salkovitz empathize with the workers’ perspective and the need to stand up for their rights.

In anticipation of the strike, the STM has enhanced communication efforts, including increased signage and audio announcements in stations and clear departure time postings for the last trains during strike days to minimize confusion for passengers.
