“Stranded on the Tracks: Montreal’s REM Commuters Face Over an Hour of Delays in Massive Wednesday Service Shutdown”

Montreal’s REM Light-Rail Network Faces Disruption, Leaving Passengers Stranded
A disruption rocked Montreal’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM) light-rail network on Wednesday, causing chaos for passengers mid-commute. The technical issue, which commenced around 5:50 p.m., prompted a sudden stoppage of trains, leaving travelers stranded onboard.

CDPQ Infra, the overseeing body, disclosed that the outage resulted in a significant breakdown of communication throughout the network. Spokesperson Francis Labbé stated, “This incident disrupted the connection with trains and the system enabling communication with passengers aboard the cars.”

Efforts are underway to pinpoint the root cause of the outage and implement necessary corrections, as confirmed by Labbé. While service restoration is ongoing, emergency teams have been dispatched to aid affected passengers.

In a bid to facilitate the safe exit of passengers, a delicate operation was conducted to relocate the six stalled cars sequentially. One train, halted near the REM’s L’Île-des-Sœurs Station, remained motionless on the tracks till late evening.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by passengers, Labbé expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and promised a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences. The network is now functioning normally after the disruption.
