Montreal Faces Population Plunge: 200,000 Fewer Residents Projected by 2028, Reveals Quebec Statistics Institute

The population of Montreal is expected to decrease in the coming years, according to projections from the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ).

In a recent demographic bulletin released in July, the ISQ anticipates a loss of 201,000 residents on the Island of Montreal by 2030, which would represent a nearly 10% decline in its population over five years. Presently, around 2.2 million people call the island home.

Some Montrealers are expressing concerns about this projection, citing potential negative impacts on the city’s economy. Rising costs and inflation are discouraging some residents from having children, which could contribute to the population decrease.

Additionally, the ISQ forecasts a continued trend of Montrealers moving to the suburbs for a quieter lifestyle. This shift away from the city center is expected to persist in the coming years, with some individuals seeking a more peaceful environment away from the urban hustle and bustle.

These projections are reviewed annually by the ISQ and consider the Quebec government’s immigration targets. While a significant number of permanent immigrants are expected to arrive this year, there is a planned reduction in the following years to promote the regional settlement of newcomers throughout Quebec.
