“Maple Ridge Crisis: Water Main Break Disrupts Gas Line, FortisBC Rushes to Respond”

A water main break in Maple Ridge has resulted in a rupture in a nearby natural gas line, according to FortisBC.

City of Maple Ridge chief operating officer Walter Oleschak shared that the incident occurred along Lougheed Highway eastbound near 203rd Street just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Oleschak mentioned that they are currently awaiting FortisBC’s assessment to proceed with emergency repairs.

Although concerns are raised regarding the ruptured gas line, Oleschak stated that the risk in this specific scenario is likely low. He explained that the danger primarily arises when gas accumulates and is confined without an outlet for escape.

FortisBC assured that updates on repair progress will be provided once the crews are able to evaluate the situation.

As a consequence of the water main break, traffic disruptions were experienced in the area, with Lougheed Highway closed eastbound at 203rd Street.
