“Rights Group Contests New Appointment to Quebec Superior Court, Claims Judicial Misstep”

A legal rights organization, Droits collectifs Québec, is criticizing the recent selection of judge Robert Leckey for Quebec Superior Court, claiming it violates laws and the constitution.

According to the group, Leckey does not fulfill the essential criteria necessary for the position. Federal regulations stipulate that a candidate must have a minimum of 10 years as a member of their provincial bar association to qualify as a superior court judge.

Despite being the former Dean of McGill University’s Law Faculty, Leckey had only completed seven years with the Quebec Bar when he was appointed in January, as highlighted by the organization.

Droits collectifs Québec has taken legal action by filing a motion at Quebec Superior Court to challenge his appointment.

The Canadian Press has sought a response from Canada’s Justice Department, but they have yet to provide a statement.
