Surrey Mayor and Police Chief to Unveil Plans to Combat Extortion Cases
Surrey’s mayor, along with the Surrey Police Service (SPS) chief, are gearing up for a major announcement at a news conference this Monday. The city is grappling with a surge in attempted extortion cases, prompting authorities to take swift action.
Since the beginning of this year, Surrey has already seen a concerning 39 cases of extortion. The reasons behind these incidents remain murky, with no culprits apprehended yet.
In response to the escalating situation, the SPS established a specialized task force, the Extortion Investigations Team. This unit is delving deep into the recurring targeting of South Asian businesses, causing unease within the community.
Among the notable incidents is the ordeal faced by Kap’s Café on Scott Road, a business associated with Bollywood luminary Kapil Sharma. The café bore the brunt of multiple shooting incidents on July 10 and August 7.
Regarding these cases, SPS stated that investigations relating to Kap’s Café are ongoing, without any arrests made thus far.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information to aid in the investigations.
Chief Constable Norm Lipinski emphasized the necessity of a collaborative effort between law enforcement, victims, and the community to combat the extortion wave effectively.
