Toronto is in for a delightful late-summer treat this week, as the city is expected to enjoy a string of warm and sunny days, with temperatures soaring well above the usual for this time of year.
According to Environment Canada, the mercury is set to hit around 24 °C on Monday and Tuesday, before climbing to 26 °C on Wednesday and peaking at 28 °C on Thursday, all against a backdrop of mostly clear skies. The nights will be comfortably mild, with temperatures in the mid-teens, offering a reprieve from the cool autumn evenings that typically start creeping in.
While the forecast might shift slightly, current predictions suggest that temperatures will dip towards the end of the week and into the weekend, with some more cloud cover expected. However, there’s no rain or showers on the horizon just yet, though Friday night could see temperatures drop to as low as 9 °C in the city.
Looking back at historical data, mid-to-late September in Toronto has usually been cooler, but not as chilly as one might imagine. Over the past two decades, average daytime highs in the city between September 15 and 22 have hovered around 22 °C, with nighttime lows reaching about 14 °C. While occasional warm spells are not uncommon, having sustained high temperatures in the upper 20s so late in the month is quite unusual.
Comparing to previous years, in 2023, temperatures during this week ranged from 19 °C to 23 °C with several rainy days. Even in 2024, when September started off warm, the mercury only hit 25 °C once during this period. If this week’s forecast holds true, it would mark one of the warmest mid-September stretches Toronto has experienced in recent times.
If Thursday’s expected high of 28 °C materializes, it will come within a few degrees of the record for September 18 in Toronto, which stands at 31.1 °C set back in 1942.
