Montreal Court Deliberates Fate of Mother Cleared of Criminal Charges for Daughter’s Abandonment

A Quebec court judge is set to determine the fate of a Montreal mother accused of abandoning her three-year-old daughter. The judge will decide whether the mother should stay at the Philippe-Pinel psychiatric institute or be released under certain conditions. This decision comes after the mother, aged 34, was found not criminally responsible due to a mental illness for charges of criminal negligence and unlawful abandonment of a child.

Both the Crown and the defense agreed that the mother, who was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, was not in the right state of mind when she left her child. It was revealed that her mental health had been deteriorating, leading her to believe her daughter was possessed. The mother posted a concerning TikTok video before the incident, indicating her state of mind at that time.

After the girl was found dehydrated but alive, the father now cares for her as she continues to struggle emotionally. The family has been through a difficult time, with the young girl facing psychological challenges.
