Hamilton authorities have shared video footage captured by a doorbell camera revealing a woman who allegedly stole a gold necklace from a senior in Flamborough. They are seeking the community’s assistance in identifying her.
The footage, taken on September 8 at approximately 3:30 p.m., depicts the suspect approaching the senior’s residence and interacting with her as if they were familiar with each other.
The suspect is seen hugging and kissing the senior before placing a piece of fake jewelry around her neck. It is reported that she then removed and took the victim’s authentic gold necklace during this deceitful act.
Described as a woman in her early 40s, standing around five feet seven inches tall with a medium build, the suspect was last spotted departing in a dark vehicle that displayed noticeable damage to the front end.
Authorities caution that this form of theft, known as distraction theft, frequently targets seniors. The tactics typically involve perpetrators offering hugs, jewelry, or gratitude for directions as a means to get close enough to steal valuable items.
These incidents are part of a troubling trend of distraction thefts on the rise in Hamilton. While only nine cases were reported in 2021, the number surged to 54 in 2024. Shockingly, between January and August of the current year, there have already been 43 reported cases, nearly matching the total from the previous year.
