Leading up to the upcoming municipal elections in Montreal on Nov. 2, Élections Montréal has released important information for residents who want to participate in the voting process.
Montreal residents will have a full week, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2, to cast their votes with various options available this year due to innovative pilot projects.
With last year’s voter turnout at only 38.3%, Élections Montréal aims to increase participation by providing enhanced access to voting methods.
Sébastien Trottier, spokesperson for Élections Montréal, emphasized the importance of making voting easier to ensure maximum voter turnout, stating, “We aim to facilitate voting and encourage optimal participation.”
Advanced voting will be held on Sunday, Oct. 24 from noon to 8 p.m. at more than 200 locations throughout the city.
Beside the official election day on Nov. 2, with polling stations open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Montrealers can also vote at the returning officer’s office in 70 locations.
Options for mobile polling and voting by mail are also available for eligible voters.
To cast your vote, it’s essential to be registered, and the deadline to verify your voter registration card sent by mail is Oct. 16.
The election will determine the city’s mayor, along with 102 other positions distributed among 19 boroughs and 58 districts. Those interested in running as candidates must submit their nominations by Oct. 3.
For the first time, post-secondary students will be able to vote on campus on Oct. 24, 27, 28, and 29. This initiative aims to engage students in the voting process and enhance voter turnout.
Innovatively, “Small Polling Stations” will be set up for children and teens to participate in a mock voting experience, encouraging future engagement in elections.
