Martine Biron Slams Medical Specialists for ‘Holding Students Hostage’ in Fierce Accusation

The Higher Education Minister, Martine Biron, has expressed dismay over the pressure tactics employed by medical specialists, urging them to cease holding students “hostage” and resume their teaching roles.

During a press briefing at the National Assembly, Minister Biron highlighted the disruptions caused by the specialists’ actions, including canceled internships and the need for course retakes. She emphasized the crucial role of specialist doctors as mentors for students and called for their collaboration in the educational process.

The specialists have halted teaching activities in opposition to Bill 106, which proposes tying a portion of their pay to performance metrics. Minister Biron voiced concerns that these tactics could impede students’ graduation prospects, particularly in meeting residency requirements.

Meanwhile, the Quebec Federation of Medical Specialists (FSMQ) indicated on social media their continued mobilization in response to the bill, signaling a potential escalation of pressure tactics.

In negotiations with Health Minister Christian Dubé, the specialists have made some headway, with a reduction in the proposed link between pay and performance indicators. Minister Dubé emphasized the need for the federations to engage in constructive dialogue and hinted at upcoming negotiations.

As the government prepares to present a revised proposal to the doctors, the ongoing discussions and tensions in the medical sector remain at the forefront.
