Ontario’s Vaccination Program Update for Fall 2021
Ontario is gearing up to launch its fall immunization program to tackle COVID-19, flu, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). The initiative will kick off on Sept. 22, prioritizing high-risk and essential groups in the province. High-risk individuals, including those aged 65 and older, hospital patients and staff, residents of long-term care homes, and more, will be among the first to access the vaccines.
Residents aged 60 to 74 with specific risk factors or living in higher-risk environments, as well as those aged 75 and above, will also be eligible for RSV vaccines starting on the same day. Flu vaccines will follow suit, becoming available to high-risk individuals on Sept. 29.
Minister of Health Sylvia Jones emphasized the importance of ensuring convenient access to immunizations for all eligible groups, with a focus on proximity and timeliness. The rollout plan includes provisions for newborns, infants, high-risk children, and pregnant women to receive the RSV vaccine in early October.
For the general public, the wait will be until Oct. 27 to receive both COVID-19 and flu shots. These vaccinations will be accessible at pharmacies, selected health units, and participating medical facilities.
Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health, underscored the significance of staying updated on seasonal vaccines, urging everyone to take proactive measures for their well-being as we approach the fall season.
