Blainville Launches Comprehensive Environmental Probe into Stablex Landfill: Water, Air, and Soil Under Scrutiny

Mayor Takes Action on Sampling Campaign Near Landfill Site

Blainville’s Mayor, Liza Poulin, has taken matters into her own hands by launching a sampling campaign near the Stablex landfill site following a lack of response from the Environment Ministry.

Mayor Poulin has been urging the ministry to release the surface water and groundwater sampling data collected near the site in 2024 and to conduct a new sampling campaign, but her requests have gone unanswered.

In response to what she perceives as government inaction, the city has hired a specialized firm to conduct a sampling campaign to assess air quality, sediment quality, and surface water quality. Mayor Poulin is committed to making the report public, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability.

Citizen groups have also raised concerns about contamination from the landfill site, prompting calls for action from the government. Despite assurances of compliance from the former Minister of the Environment, concerns persist among residents and local officials.

The mayor continues to advocate for public access to sampling data and new sampling efforts. However, with changing government leadership and ongoing challenges, the situation remains unresolved.

The expansion of the hazardous waste landfill by the American company Stablex has further exacerbated tensions, leading to legislative measures and protests from concerned citizens and local authorities.
