In a recent incident that has stirred up controversy in Leaside, a developer ignored city directives and cut down a cherished tree, much to the dismay of the community. The same developer is now under fire for another tree removal, prompting residents to voice their concerns.
Karin Hwang, a resident of Leaside, expressed her disappointment, questioning the need to fell the maple tree that posed no obstruction. Despite efforts to save the tree after its root system was compromised during Modcity’s excavation work, it was ultimately deemed unsafe and had to be removed with the necessary permits and expenses.
The incident echoes a similar situation where an 80-year-old tree was chopped down by Modcity, who denied its existence when questioned by CityNews. The disregard for regulations has sparked criticism from Don Valley West Councillor Rachel Chernos Lin, who accused the developer of flouting rules and prioritizing profit over environmental preservation.
In response, Modcity stated its commitment to Toronto’s tree canopy by planning to plant four mature trees on the Leaside property. However, tensions have escalated as Chernos Lin advocates for stricter penalties for developers who violate regulations, emphasizing the importance of balancing housing needs with environmental conservation.
Calls for action have led the city’s infrastructure and environment committee to review bylaws to safeguard Toronto’s tree canopy in the future, reflecting growing concerns over preserving the urban greenery amid development pressures.
