After Bonnie Crombie’s recent departure as the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, all eyes are now on Marit Stiles, the leader of the Ontario New Democrats. The party is set to evaluate Stiles’ leadership at their weekend convention in Niagara Falls.
Crombie’s resignation came as a surprise, despite winning 57% of the vote in the Liberal leadership race. In contrast, there are no signs of a challenge against Stiles’ leadership within the NDP.
Although the NDP maintained its status as the Official Opposition after the snap election in February, the party did not see any progress from 2022. They lost four seats and fell behind the Liberals and Conservatives in the popular vote.
Stiles has been actively engaging with party members by visiting 50 ridings across the province during the summer to understand their perspectives.
Having taken over as the leader of the Ontario NDP in 2023 following Andrea Horwath’s resignation, Stiles is poised to present her vision for the party’s future during her address to delegates on Saturday morning.
The outcome of the leadership evaluation is anticipated to be announced on Saturday evening.
