Nationwide Manhunt Ends: Suspect Linked to Rabih Alkhalil Jailbreak Captured

John Potvin, one of the individuals accused of aiding notorious gangland fugitive Rabih Alkhalil in escaping a British Columbia jail, has been apprehended, according to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC).

Potvin, who faces charges of conspiracy to commit prison breach and prison breach, had a Canada-wide warrant issued against him on September 8. Alongside him, two other men, Edward Ayoub and Ryan Van Gool, were also charged for their alleged roles in assisting Alkhalil’s escape from the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, in July 2022. While Ayoub and Van Gool are already in custody, Alkhalil himself remains at large.

Hailing from Ottawa, Potvin was apprehended on September 19 in Spain after Canadian law enforcement issued a ‘Red Notice,’ as confirmed by Cpl. Sarbjit Sangha. A Red Notice acts as an international alert, enabling partner countries to detect and intercept the wanted individual if they attempt to travel or undergo identity checks at airports.

The CFSEU-BC is collaborating with the RCMP to facilitate Potvin’s extradition back to Canada. Additionally, a cash reward has been offered for any information leading to the arrest of Rabih Alkhalil.
