Montreal Port Paralyzed: 32 Gateway Terminal Workers Launch Strike Monday

On Monday at 5 a.m., a group of 32 workers at the Port of Montreal will initiate an open-ended strike. The Montreal Gateway Terminals employees formally announced their decision to strike after voting 96% in favor of this course of action back on September 11.

Efforts to mediate and find common ground have so far proved unsuccessful, as acknowledged by the union. The main points of contention revolve around subcontracting, wage disputes, and operational standards necessary for the terminal’s efficient functioning. The union asserts that despite the company’s profitability, the workers feel they are not receiving fair treatment.

Since the expiration of the previous collective agreement on December 31, 2024, workers have been operating without a new agreement in place.

Representing the Montreal Longshoremen’s Union, as well as longshoremen in Quebec City, Trois-Rivières, Sorel, and Matane, CUPE oversees approximately 1,600 members affected by this strike.
