The attorney representing nine women who have come forward with allegations of sexual assault against the founder of the popular Just for Laughs festival is adamant that his clients are speaking the truth about their experiences.
During the closing arguments in the civil trial of former comedy mogul Gilbert Rozon, lawyer Bruce Johnston emphasized the credibility of his clients’ accounts. He asserted in a Montreal court on Monday that it is implausible for all nine women to be fabricating their stories of alleged abuse.
Johnston pointed out to Quebec Superior Court Judge Chantal Tremblay that Rozon allegedly used deceptive tactics to isolate his victims in secluded areas, where he would reportedly surprise and assault them.
The women involved in the case are seeking $14 million in damages for incidents of sexual assault and rape said to have taken place between 1980 and 2004. While Rozon, aged 70, has admitted to consensual relations with three of the accusers, he firmly denies the other accusations brought against him.
The defense’s final arguments are scheduled to be presented in court later this week.
