Montreal Unveils Groundbreaking Modular Housing at Historic Hippodrome Site for Transitional Solution

Montreal, in partnership with the Quebec and Canadian governments and the Old Brewery Mission, is unveiling the island’s inaugural modular housing initiative on Monday. This project aims to offer temporary accommodation to individuals awaiting social housing.

Situated at Montreal’s Hippodrome site in Côte-des-Neiges–NDG, the modular homes feature 27 rooms designed for single occupants or couples, with a capacity to house up to 30 individuals. The facility also includes a specially equipped room for individuals with reduced mobility, as well as a shared space comprising a living area, kitchen, and dining room.

The Old Brewery Mission will provide round-the-clock services at the site, such as counseling, support, referrals, meals, and community events. Additionally, they will oversee the upkeep of the premises and foster positive relationships within the neighborhood.

This initiative targets individuals who have recently faced homelessness, can adapt to a communal living environment, and do not exhibit behavioral challenges related to mental health or substance use disorders.

These modular homes represent the initial phase of a broader transitional housing plan in Montreal. The second site is slated to open in Ahuntsic-Cartierville later this year, with a third location planned for Outremont in 2026.
