A coalition of over 250 municipal elected officials, including councillors and mayors from various parts of the country, is uniting to urge the Carney government to prioritize investments in projects that will contribute to the nation’s growth rather than its destruction.
The coalition is appealing to the Liberal government to select national infrastructure initiatives that can safeguard Canadians from the impacts of climate change. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante, co-chair of the “Let’s Roll Up Our Sleeves” campaign, stressed the importance of directing investments towards options that support both the economy and ecological transition to prevent long-term consequences.
Expressing concerns, the officials are particularly worried about the inclusion of new fossil fuel projects among the recently identified “crucial” national projects under the Mark Carney government.
For instance, the coalition raised objections to the LNG Canada project, labeling it a “carbon bomb” and highlighting its foreign ownership. They advocate for investments in enterprises that contribute positively to the nation, emphasizing the need to steer away from fossil fuel development.
