STM Strike Escalates: Brace for Major Disruptions on Wednesday

The ongoing strike by STM maintenance workers has entered its second day, causing disruptions to public transportation services in the city.

With approximately 2,400 maintenance workers participating in the strike, buses and metros are operating on reduced schedules on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until October 5. This rotating strike schedule is impacting commuters, especially during off-peak hours.

During strike days, metro services are limited to specific windows of time: morning rush hour (6:30–9:30 a.m.), afternoon peak hours (2:45–5:45 p.m.), and late night service (11 p.m. to closing). There are significant gaps in metro availability between these time frames.

Similarly, bus services are also affected, with STM buses not running between 9:15 a.m. and 3 p.m., as well as between 6 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. on the designated strike days.

Paratransit services, however, continue to operate normally during this period, providing an alternative for those in need of transportation assistance.

The ongoing standoff between the STM management and maintenance workers revolves around issues such as unconventional work schedules and demands for salary increases. Despite efforts to negotiate, both parties have yet to reach a resolution.

Commuters are advised to visit the STM website for updated schedules and are encouraged to factor in extra travel time to accommodate the disruptions caused by the strike action.
