Montreal Residents Anticipate Longer Wait for Full REM Experience
Excitement builds as Montrealers look forward to experiencing the complete Réseau express métropolitain (REM), but they’ll need to exercise a bit more patience.
Recent reports from La Presse and The Gazette reveal that the anticipated opening of the new Deux-Montagnes branch in the Laurentians has been delayed until November, a month past its initial target date. Additionally, service to l’Anse-à-l’Orme in the West Island of Montreal is now expected to be postponed until spring 2026.
During the ongoing REM construction, temporary bus shuttles have been in operation to assist users of the Deux-Montagnes line, ensuring continued connectivity for commuters.
Originally slated for completion by the end of 2024, the two new branches faced delays, with the latest target being pushed to fall 2025. Despite earlier mentions of an October launch, recent developments suggest a further delay in the timeline.
In a related update, CDPQ Infra is set to announce the revised schedule for the REM lines on Thursday. The subsidiary of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec is scheduled to host a press conference to disclose “upcoming steps” and potential “changes to the operator’s responsibilities,” as stated in the media invitation addressed to industry insiders.
While immediate confirmation from CDPQ Infra remains pending, Montreal residents eagerly await further details on the evolving timeline for the completion and launch of the REM project.
