“Police Investigate Ominous Threats Against Businesses Over Controversial B.C. Ostrich Slaughter”

Mounties in British Columbia are currently investigating a surge in threats of violence directed at businesses believed to be involved in a potential cull of 400 ostriches. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency had ordered the cull following an avian influenza outbreak at Universal Ostrich Farms. However, a temporary stay granted by the Supreme Court of Canada has halted the cull for now.

Businesses across the province have faced intimidating calls and emails, warning them to cease participation in the cull. Some businesses have reported threats of violence, including shootings and harassment of employees. The RCMP have initiated multiple investigations to address these threats and intend to make arrests.

The CFIA, while respecting the court’s stay, continues to control the ostrich enclosure at the farm. Reports of threats emerged as CFIA officials were escorted onto the farm by police. Supporters at the farm have been encouraged to leave negative online reviews for businesses associated with the cull.

Karen Espersen and Katie Pasitney, key figures in the movement to save the ostriches, received the news of the stay with relief and gratitude. White-clad CFIA workers are currently caring for the ostriches under agency custody, following the avian flu outbreak that claimed the lives of numerous birds on the farm.

The ongoing legal battles and social media efforts to protect the ostriches have garnered significant attention, with the community rallying behind the cause. Despite challenges and threats, the fight to save the ostrich flock continues as the legal process unfolds.
