“PQ Vows to Implement Ban on Religious Symbols in Elementary Schools If Elected”

The Parti Québécois (PQ), a political party in Quebec, has made a significant promise ahead of the upcoming October 2026 general election. If elected, they plan to implement a ban on “ostentatious” religious symbols for elementary school students.

In a recent consultation with its members, the PQ found overwhelming support for this proposal, with 90 percent of participants backing the ban. Additionally, the party members voted in favor of prohibiting street prayers (95 percent) and prayers in state-funded schools ranging from elementary to college levels (96 percent).

PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon shared the outcomes of the consultation during a press briefing at the National Assembly, emphasizing that these decisions would serve as guidelines for their potential future government. The session revealed a 55 percent participation rate among members.

It is important to note that the current Legault government has also expressed intentions to address street prayers, with plans to introduce legislation aimed at bolstering secularism in Quebec.
