Canada Post employees across the country have gone on strike in response to Ottawa’s decision to halt home delivery services. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) called for the strike, expressing outrage at the government’s actions that impact postal services and workers. In Montreal, workers gathered outside the Bridge Street office to picket.
The strike was prompted by Canada Post being given approval by the federal government to significantly reduce mail delivery services over the coming years. Nicole Chouinard, CUPW Prince George president, voiced disappointment over the situation, stating that workers feel mistreated and disheartened.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has criticized the strike, emphasizing the negative impact on supply chains and the reliance of Canadians on postal services for deliveries. Pascal Chan, the vice-president of strategic policy and supply chains, urged both parties to resume negotiations to support consumers and businesses efficiently.
Despite the strike, Canada Post has confirmed the continued delivery of socio-economic cheques from government organizations during the labor disruption. Furthermore, arrangements have been made to ensure existing live-animal shipments are maintained, although new shipments will not be accepted.
