Major Sewer Overhaul to Shut Down Vancouver’s Granville Street, Impacting Traffic Flow

Vancouver’s Granville Street Sees Traffic Disruptions for Major Sewer System Upgrade

The City of Vancouver has kicked off a $20-million sewer system upgrade project along the south end of Granville Street, leading to traffic disruptions in the area. Starting from September 26 and lasting until early morning on September 29, lane reductions are in effect at the intersection of Granville Street and 64th Avenue.

Crews have already begun work on the project as of Friday morning, resulting in one northbound lane and two southbound lanes being open to traffic on Granville Street in the affected zone. While traffic personnel will be on-site to assist drivers and pedestrians, delays are expected as the project progresses.

The city aims to replace the existing combined sewer system with a separated and higher-capacity system, featuring distinct pipes for rainwater runoff and sewage. This upgrade is essential to accommodate the growing population, address the impacts of climate change, and safeguard the health of the Fraser River.

Following the initial phase, most of the remaining construction work on Granville Street, between West 59th Avenue and West 64th Avenue, will be conducted overnight. Additionally, minor sidewalk rehabilitation projects are scheduled for various sections of Granville Street throughout fall 2025.

Completion of the Granville Street project is slated for spring 2026, with daytime construction on adjacent blocks at West 59th Avenue and West 62nd Avenue continuing between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Detailed information about the construction initiative can be accessed on the City of Vancouver website.
