Hitachi Energy Boosts Investments in Quebec Transformer Plant
Hitachi Energy is significantly expanding its high-power transformer manufacturing plant in Varennes, Montérégie, with an additional $270 million injection. The news, unveiled in a grand event in Varennes, showcased a vision of the enhanced plant through a striking poster, set to elevate its capabilities to new heights.
This substantial investment, following a previous commitment of $140 million, aims to amplify production at the facility, known for crafting massive transformers equivalent in size to a two-story house. These transformers, essential for electricity transmission and distribution in various industries, will play a pivotal role in advancing renewable energy integration and fortifying network resilience.
Carla Vicente, Hitachi Energy Canada’s Executive Director, emphasized the transformative impact of the investment, predicting a surge of 500 new jobs and a threefold increase in production at the Varennes site.
The provincial government of Quebec, a major supporter of the project, pledged an additional $16 million on top of its earlier $30 million contribution. Minister Christine Fréchette highlighted Quebec’s renewable energy prowess and its crucial role in shaping Canada’s energy landscape.
Meanwhile, the federal government is reinforcing its commitment with an extra $10 million, recognizing the surge in demand for transformers globally. Minister Tim Hodgson stressed the urgency of meeting market needs, underlining the plant’s strategic importance in Canada’s manufacturing sector.
