Larry Campbell, a former senator, Vancouver mayor, police officer, and chief coroner, has been appointed by the provincial government as a special coordinator for the Downtown Eastside. His primary focus will be collaborating with various levels of government to enhance housing, public spaces, infrastructure, and healthcare within the neighborhood.
Campbell’s role involves aligning government initiatives with policy goals throughout his six-month contract, which commenced on Monday. According to harm-reduction specialist Guy Felicella, the key to success lies in providing stable housing and long-term support rather than short-term solutions, as band-aids are insufficient for addressing complex issues like addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges.
In a recent statement, Campbell emphasized the importance of direct engagement with the residents and stakeholders of the Downtown Eastside to bring about positive changes. He aims to leverage existing community and business leadership, along with his expertise and connections, to develop housing policies tailored to local needs and to facilitate seamless care for marginalized groups, including women, Indigenous individuals, and those with complex mental health and addiction issues.
Felicella expressed optimism about Campbell’s compassionate and harm-reduction-focused approach, citing Campbell’s presence and familiarity during his own struggles with addiction and mental health in the neighborhood. Recognizing the individuals in the Downtown Eastside as people facing daily battles, Felicella emphasized the importance of access to services and maintaining a sense of hope despite the challenges they encounter.
