Union Slams STM’s ‘Inflexibility’ as Talks Falter, Warns of Escalating Strike Actions

Commuters in Montreal may face ongoing transit disruptions this week as maintenance workers from the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) continue their strike, amid stalled negotiations.

The Syndicat du transport de Montréal–CSN revealed that the STM turned down a weekend proposal aimed at resolving non-monetary issues and ending the strike. The union, representing approximately 2,400 mechanics and maintenance staff across STM’s bus and metro systems, expressed frustration over the lack of progress in negotiations, accusing the transit agency of not negotiating in good faith.

Union president Bruno Jeannotte criticized the STM’s stance, emphasizing the importance of mutual compromise in negotiations. The strike is set to persist until October 5, causing disruptions during non-peak hours on specific days, along with a general overtime strike throughout the week.

Despite offering alternatives, including a quicker mechanism to address psychological harassment complaints, the union reported difficulties in reaching a meaningful agreement with the STM. The STM’s refusal to negotiate seriously has drawn criticism from union representatives, with concerns raised regarding potential legislative interventions to end the strike.

The STM defended its position, citing financial constraints as a key consideration in the negotiations. The agency emphasized the need for meaningful progress and expressed openness to further dialogue. A recent arbitration decision favored the union, reaffirming its stance on protecting workers’ rights during bargaining.

Montreal commuters shared mixed reactions to the ongoing strike, with some expressing frustration over the disruption to daily routines, while others voiced understanding for the workers’ concerns. The strike’s impact on daily life, including increased transportation costs and limitations on personal activities, has sparked varied responses among the public.

As the strike lingers, the union hopes for continued mediation beyond the current deadline, emphasizing the desire to secure a fair collective agreement with the STM.
