“Vancouver Mayor’s Tax Plan Sparks Outrage Among Councillors, Dubbed ‘Cynical Vote-Buying Exercise'”

Vancouver Mayor Faces Criticism Over Potential Job Cuts at City Hall

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is under fire as concerns rise over the possibility of job cuts at City Hall. Coun. Pete Fry has voiced support for rumors suggesting that Sim is considering implementing cuts, citing various budgetary pressures faced by the city.

During a recent budget update, it was projected that there could be a significant property tax increase this year. This increase is attributed to factors such as new police and fire hires, wage hikes, inflation, and other financial demands from Metro Vancouver. In response, Sim has announced plans to propose a motion for a zero per cent property tax increase in an effort to streamline operations and protect essential services like libraries, recreational centers, and public safety.

However, Fry has expressed concerns that achieving a zero per cent increase may result in substantial cuts to departments that Sim believes have been shifted by the provincial government to the city. This move has generated skepticism among city councillors, with Coun. Lucy Maloney questioning the rationale behind the cuts and raising doubts about the long-term sustainability of the budget plan.

Despite Sim’s intentions to tighten city spending, Fry criticizes the mayor for what he perceives as missed opportunities to address budget issues more strategically in the past. He highlights previous decisions by Sim, such as costly new hires and increased police overtime expenses, as factors contributing to the current financial challenges faced by the city.
