York Regional Police have announced that two individuals have been charged following the discovery of a loaded firearm and cash during a search in Vaughan linked to an ongoing investigation into organized crime and extortion. The search, which took place on September 23, was part of a broader probe into illicit gaming and betting operations.
According to authorities, a suspect allegedly collaborated with an organized crime syndicate that ran illegal gambling websites between January 2024 and September 2025. Victims were reportedly allowed to place bets on credit but were coerced to repay their losses with cash, often at inflated amounts. The investigation revealed a pattern of threats and violence used to intimidate victims into settling their debts.
In connection with these activities, Umberto (Rob) Rupolo, 37, from Vaughan, has been charged with offenses including kidnapping, extortion, conspiracy, possession of a prohibited firearm, and possession of proceeds obtained through crime. Meanwhile, Sadaf Mokhammad, 34, also from Vaughan, faces charges related to firearms possession and storage, as well as possession of proceeds obtained through criminal means.
Authorities have released a photo of Rupolo, expressing concerns that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
