A man in Montreal’s South Shore who hit a homeless woman with his truck and drove away has pleaded guilty to three out of five charges in court. Luigi Fragomele, 46, was accused of injuring Caroline Derome in Brossard on May 27, with police stating that the act was deliberate.
At the courthouse, Fragomele admitted to charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident, and committing mischief under $5,000. However, he did not accept responsibility for assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.
Following a psychiatric evaluation, Fragomele was deemed fit to stand trial and potentially criminally responsible by the Philippe-Pinel Institute in July. Despite defense claims of faulty brakes on his truck, a judge ruled that the vehicle’s brakes were in working order.
Fragomele was denied bail due to being considered a danger to the public, with the judge condemning the alleged assault as an act of “hate” against a marginalized group. Witnesses reported seeing him allegedly repeatedly ramming into a homeless encampment, though video evidence did not capture him hitting the victim before leaving the scene.
