Quebec Family Physicians Commit to Educating Next Generation Amid Healthcare Challenges

The Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ), representing family doctors in the province, has decided to postpone the suspension of teaching for medical students following a mediation process with the government. Originally set to begin on October 1, this pressure tactic has been put on hold indefinitely. Medical students will now continue to benefit from teaching activities, while general practitioners will boycott medical-administrative tasks.

In a statement released on Thursday, the FMOQ emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue and giving mediation a chance to succeed by refraining from implementing new pressure tactics at this time. Despite this decision, it’s worth noting that 91% of FMOQ members supported the suspension of teaching.

In a show of solidarity and a call for healthcare reform to involve family physicians, the FMOQ launched an advertising campaign with the slogan, “We also want change.” This campaign underscores the belief that reform in healthcare should be collaborative and not adversarial.

Negotiations between the government and medical federations, including the FMOQ and the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ), are ongoing to renew framework agreements that govern physicians’ compensation packages. Specialists had previously halted student teaching activities, an essential leverage tool, and engaged in a mediation process with the government.
