“Transition Montréal Unveils Bold Plan to Curb Gentrification Surge”

Montreal mayoral candidate, Craig Sauvé, has revealed a plan by his party, Transition Montréal, to champion independent businesses in the upcoming municipal election. Emphasizing the importance of preserving the unique character and soul of Montreal’s neighborhoods, Sauvé aims to combat gentrification by supporting local businesses and preventing unpredictable rent hikes.

Having engaged with numerous independent business owners over the years, Sauvé expressed concern over the loss of these businesses, which he sees as integral to the city’s identity. Transition Montréal intends to address gentrification by bolstering the Société d’habitation et de développement de Montréal (SHDM) with additional funding, focusing on acquiring buildings at risk.

Highlighting the impact of rising rents on local businesses, Sauvé cited the case of Wellington Street, where the sudden spike in rents led to closures despite the street being heralded as the “coolest street in the world.” Transition Montréal’s vision is centered on protecting communities, fostering a vibrant local economy, and ensuring Montreal remains a place where residents from all walks of life can afford to live.
