“Former Hydro Insider Faces Trial in High-Stakes Espionage Case”

A former Quebec electricity utility employee, Yuesheng Wang, is set to face trial today on charges of economic espionage linked to China. Wang, who was charged back in November 2022, is the first individual accused of economic espionage under Canada’s Security of Information Act.

The investigation by the RCMP’s national security enforcement team was initiated in August 2022 following a complaint from Hydro-Québec’s corporate security branch.

Apart from the economic espionage charge, Wang is facing three additional charges under the Criminal Code related to computer fraud, dishonestly acquiring a trade secret, and breach of trust. In April 2024, Wang faced new charges for preparing acts on behalf of a foreign entity and sharing his intentions with that entity, the People’s Republic of China.

During court proceedings, Wang claimed that the information he shared was not confidential and was publicly available. He emphasized the importance of staying in Canada to clear his name and protect his reputation.

This article, originally reported by The Canadian Press on October 6, 2025, sheds light on the upcoming trial and the allegations surrounding Wang’s actions.
