Sam Montembeault will be taking the lead for the Montreal Canadiens as they hit the ice on opening night.
The Canadiens’ head coach, Martin St. Louis, officially announced on Tuesday that Montembeault will be the starting goaltender for the team’s season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. The game is set to air at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet.
Montembeault has solidified his position as the top goaltender for the Canadiens, having played an impressive 62 games last season. With a record of 31-24-7, he maintained a 2.82 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage, and achieved four shutouts.
Fans will no doubt be looking forward to Montembeault replicating his outstanding performance from last year’s season opener, where he made history with a 48-save shutout against Toronto.
While Montembeault is set to see the majority of starts this season, Jakub Dobes is also poised to make his mark by starting in the second game against the Detroit Red Wings, part of a back-to-back matchup.
Dobes, in his rookie season, displayed promise by playing in 16 games with a 7-4-3 record. He maintained a 2.74 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage, and secured a shutout. Despite some playoff challenges, Dobes is eager to showcase his skills and contribute to the Canadiens’ success this season.
