Police Watchdog Clears Officer in Controversial Fatal Shooting in Markham, Ontario

A police officer in Ontario who fatally shot a man as he was stabbing a woman in a Markham condo has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, according to the province’s police watchdog.

The incident, which occurred on June 11 in a condominium complex on Buchanan Drive, was under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit.

The SIU reported that York Regional Police officers responded to a disturbance at a unit after hearing alarming sounds. Upon entering the unit with the help of a security guard, they discovered a woman unharmed on a massage table. A man emerged from a bedroom and began stabbing the woman despite police commands to stop, leading to the officer shooting him in the head.

The man, aged 34, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, while the woman was treated for her wounds. A knife was found at the scene.

SIU director Joseph Martino concluded that the officer’s actions were justified considering the circumstances, and no criminal charges will be pursued.
