“Authorities Crack Down on Auto Theft Epidemic, Seize Over 1,100 Stolen Vehicles Worth $84 Million!”

Canada’s National Action Plan on auto theft has shown significant success, with officials highlighting the efforts to prevent vehicle theft, recover stolen cars, and combat organized criminal networks. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree praised the collaborative approach with law enforcement, industry, and provincial governments, emphasizing the impact on reducing auto theft rates.

The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported a notable interception of 2,277 stolen vehicles in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year. In 2025, CBSA officers have already intercepted 1,185 stolen vehicles valued at $84 million, preventing their illegal exportation. This proactive measure aims to disrupt organized crime activities and enhance community safety.

During a recent press conference, the government highlighted successful initiatives, including data-sharing strategies for Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) with external partners like Équité and Carfax. Funding support has been allocated to facilitate intelligence sharing between local law enforcement, the CBSA, and the Government of Quebec to swiftly address stolen vehicles seized at ports and rail yards.

Further measures include increased inspections of export cargo containers using RCMP vehicle detection technology and security assessments at high-risk port facilities in key cities like Vancouver, Montreal, and Halifax. Additionally, grants have been awarded to Canadian companies developing anti-theft solutions, with 8 projects receiving $150,000 each.

Recent data from Équité Association shows a national decrease in auto thefts by 19% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, indicating the effectiveness of the National Action Plan. CBSA President Erin O’Gorman emphasized the agency’s role in securing the supply chain and disrupting criminal activities at borders, underscoring the commitment to analyzing stolen vehicle data and responding promptly to law enforcement referrals.
