Prime Minister Mark Carney embarks on a journey to Egypt today to participate in a summit focused on the recent truce between Israel and Hamas, facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney will be attending the summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, where Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is set to co-chair a significant “peace summit” with leaders from various countries across the Middle East, including France, Germany, and the U.K.
The current truce, now in its third day, has paved the way for aid agencies to deliver food and medicine to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, while Israel gradually withdraws its troops. As part of the agreement, Hamas is expected to release around 20 hostages on Monday, with Israel reciprocating by releasing Palestinian prisoners and detainees, as well as returning the bodies of 28 Israeli hostages.
Although Trump played a key role in brokering the truce, uncertainties loom over the prospects of a lasting ceasefire or a comprehensive peace agreement.
