Last week, a potential dam failure in British Columbia’s Interior prompted an evacuation alert for several properties, but the concerns have now been alleviated.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District announced on Friday that the man-made dam’s risks had been downgraded to “all clear,” leading to the rescinding of the evacuation alert. The dam, located about 13 kilometres north of Sun Peaks Mountain, posed a threat of releasing water uncontrollably into Fadear Creek.
Although the alert has been lifted, the district mentioned the possibility of reinstating it if conditions change and evacuation becomes necessary.
In response to the situation, a state of emergency was declared last week to equip local authorities with the power to manage the risk at the Fadear Lake dam effectively. This declaration, which includes the authority to evacuate residents, restrict travel, and access private lands for public safety, remains in place as of Monday.
