“Berube Demands Improvement: Nylander Singled Out After Maple Leafs’ Latest Defeat”

Toronto Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube expressed his concerns about William Nylander’s performance after a recent 3-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Berube emphasized that Nylander, a key forward for the team, has not been creating enough scoring opportunities in the early part of the season.

During the post-game interview, Berube highlighted Nylander’s need to take more shots, citing his low shot count in the last game against Detroit. Nylander, who had a standout season in 2023-24 and continued his strong performance in 2024-25, has struggled to make an impact with only three shots and one goal in three games.

Berube acknowledged that part of the challenge might be adjusting to new linemates, particularly playing alongside John Tavares and Bobby McMann. The absence of Mitch Marner, who was a key player on the power play, may also be affecting the team’s performance, as they have yet to score a power-play goal this season.

Despite glimpses of Nylander’s impressive skills, Berube emphasized the need for more consistency in his play, stating that the team requires a higher level of performance from him.

The Maple Leafs will face the Nashville Predators in a back-to-back game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET in Toronto.
