Canada Post Strike Threatens Crucial Welcome Hall Mission Donations, Urgent Alert Issued

Amid Canada Post Strike, Montreal’s Welcome Hall Mission Seeks Donor Support

Montreal’s Welcome Hall Mission is facing challenges due to the ongoing postal strike in Canada. The mission heavily relies on mailed donations to fund its essential programs that support vulnerable communities. The disruption caused by the strike could have a significant impact on their ability to provide crucial services.

President and CEO Sam Watts highlighted the importance of mailed donations, stating that many donors still prefer this traditional method. While some have shifted to online giving, particularly older supporters are hesitant to make the transition. Watts expressed concerns about the strike affecting their operations but is hopeful that with rotating mail strikes, donations will start flowing in again.

To cope with the situation, the mission is offering alternatives for donors uncomfortable with digital giving. Options include donating over the phone or dropping off contributions at any of their seven locations across the city. Watts emphasized the importance of continued support, reassuring donors that there are secure ways to contribute despite the strike.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) initiated the strike on Sept. 25 in response to proposed changes by the federal government impacting Canada Post’s business model. While mail delivery was initially halted, rotating strikes have now been implemented, allowing limited mail and parcel delivery to resume.

Past strikes have had a significant impact on the mission, resulting in substantial donation losses during the holiday season last year. Watts stressed the importance of timely resolution to the current strike to ensure uninterrupted support for the community members in need.

As the strike persists, Welcome Hall Mission urges donors to adapt to alternative giving methods, emphasizing that the need for assistance in the community remains constant despite the postal disruptions.
