The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is reaching out to the public for assistance following a recent extortion-related crime that resulted in a woman being injured by a stray bullet. The incident occurred on Oct. 12 in a residence on 103-A Avenue and 130 Street. While there were other individuals present at the time of the shooting, the woman was the sole victim. The perpetrator, who fired shots from outside the building, fled before authorities arrived.
SPS Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that this was the first time a person had been harmed in such an incident. The victim, initially in critical condition, has now stabilized but remains hospitalized.
Houghton highlighted the ongoing efforts to gather evidence and determine any potential links between the residence and the escalating extortion-related crimes. The police are meticulously examining the occupants and any possible connections to the crime scene as part of their investigative process.
The nature of the incident, including the timing, manner of shooting, and presence of specific elements, suggests a connection to extortion, according to Houghton. While details were scarce, investigators are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in solving the case.
The rise in extortion-related incidents has been a growing concern, with 59 cases reported so far this year in Surrey alone. The recent establishment of a task force by the provincial government underscores the severity of the issue, particularly its impact on the South Asian community.
Several individuals have been charged in connection to extortion cases in Surrey, indicating progress in the ongoing investigation. However, law enforcement agencies suspect the involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang, a group linked to similar crimes nationwide.
To combat these criminal activities, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke announced a substantial reward for information leading to convictions in extortion cases. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact the Surrey Extortion Tip Line, which operates daily with the assistance of Punjabi-speaking officers.
