Carney Announces Crackdown: Tougher Bail and Sentencing Reforms to Launch Next Week

The upcoming legislative changes regarding bail reform by the federal government aim to enhance public safety by preventing violent criminals and repeat offenders from being released back onto the streets.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that the Minister of Justice will be presenting new legislation next week, focusing on implementing reverse-onus bail provisions specifically targeting violent and organized crime-related offenses.

Under the proposed reverse-onus provision, the burden of proof will shift from the Crown to the accused individual. Instead of requiring the Crown to justify why someone should be detained, it will be the responsibility of the accused to demonstrate to the court why they should be granted release.

Prime Minister Carney emphasized the need for stricter bail processes during an event in Etobicoke, stating that the current system often leans towards releasing individuals, making it easier for repeat violent offenders to rejoin the community swiftly. The goal is to tighten bail regulations to enhance overall public safety.

In addition to the bail reform, the new legislation will allocate resources to bolster frontline law enforcement by recruiting 1,000 new RCMP personnel.
