Carney Announces Major Overhaul: Tougher Bail and Sentencing Guidelines Set to Launch Next Week

The Canadian government is set to introduce new bail reform laws to enhance public safety by targeting violent criminals and repeat offenders.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that the Minister of Justice will present a bill next week that will include reverse-onus bail provisions specifically addressing violent and organized crime-related offenses.

Under this new provision, individuals seeking bail will now have the burden to prove to the court why they should be released, shifting away from the Crown’s current responsibility to justify detention.

Speaking at an event in Etobicoke, Carney emphasized the need for stricter bail regulations to prevent repeat violent offenders from easily returning to the streets. He stated, “We are tightening bail conditions to ensure a safer community for all.”

Additionally, the legislation will allocate resources to bolster law enforcement efforts by recruiting 1,000 new RCMP staff members.
